Wadia 170i mods smile

http://www.asi-tek.com/products.html

Ca vaut le coup ?

L’éternelle question smile : to mod or not to mod ?

“Since 1991 when the first Naim CD player – the CDS – was launched, Naim’s design philosophy has been that for best sonic performance from digital audio the master clock must be positioned close to the DAC chips. When the clock and DAC chips are closely coupled, timing errors are minimised.
Whereas if a CD player (| Wadia iTransport) is connected to an external DAC via S/PDIF, the master clock is in the CD player and the DAC chips are in the DAC, i.e. they are separated by the S/PDIF interface. The DAC has to recover the clock from the S/PDIF signal, and this can easily introduce timing errors (jitter). Moreover, S/PDIF circuitry represents a radio frequency (RF) noise source and its presence in a CD player is audible. Consequently, Naim has never fitted S/PDIF outputs to its CD players and has never developed an external DAC – until now.”
(Naim DAC white paper)

“Given these technical obstacles, why has Naim designed an external DAC?
When CD was the primary source of high quality digital audio there was no motivation to engineer an external DAC: it was better to continue the integrated CD player model since it would always be superior on a performance/cost basis. But the nature of audio delivery is changing. As the price of digital storage falls by approximately half each year, so effectively limitless hard disk storage of CD-quality and high-resolution audio becomes a realistic prospect. Today audio is increasingly played back from computers, streaming network players and hard disk players such as the Naim HDX. Modern televisions, games consoles and portable audio players are also digital.
An external DAC capable of the same sound quality as a high-end CD player would significantly upgrade all these devices. “
(Naim DAC white paper)

Exemples d’équipement tueur de jitter :

. Monarchy Audio DIP Classic à 200$
http://www.monarchyaudio.com/DIP.htm

“The difference between the Wadia/iPod with and without the DIP was extreme”
http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl … 1231856202

. Genesis Digital Lens

http://www.acec13.fr/TVC/Genesis/GDL.html

. Empirical Audio Pace-Car 2 à 1250$
http://www.empiricalaudio.com/products/ … -reclocker

“In effect, let the 170i do its adaptive clock recovery thing & create a jittery digital data output stream. Then, feed this jittery digital data stream into the re-clocker running off a precision clock. The re-clocker, in all probability, has a FIFO (first-in, first-out) buffer wherein the data comes in at the jittery clock rate & gets pulled out at the precision clock rate. This is an Asynchronous Rate Conversion which converts the digital data stream from the jittery clock domain to the precision clock domain. Thus, the digital data at the re-clocker's output is very low jitter. This can now be fed into a DAC of your choice & the sonics should be much improved.”
http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl … flup&2&4#2
http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl … up&11&4#11

“I don’t mod the iTransport because the result would never be as good as my Pace-Car reclocker gives me. I decided that modding these cheap devices is just not the best way to spend resources or money for me or my customers. IMO, the thing to do is just use them (Sonos, Squeezebox, Duet, iTransport, AirPort Express) strictly as data transport mechanisms and pick the one that has the human interface that you like best. Then add the Pace-Car reclocker to it to address the timing (jitter) and the result is a world-class digital source. No amount of mods to these devices can equal what's inside a Pace-Car. This puts the jitter control into a controlled environment where it can be effectively dealt with.“

http://www.psaudio.com/ps/newsletters/july/
http://www.psaudio.com/ps/forum/viewthread/62/

“Place any digital audio into the Lens and everything we worry about: jitter, clocks, timing, wave shape, etc. are thrown out and new digital audio is rebuilt on the fly ready to be placed into your DAC in a perfect, focused, form (hence the name Digital "Lens").

The Lens will allow you to take USB from your computer, or digital audio from a $29 CD player, the output of an Apple TV’s optical feed, the digital or HDMI output of your DVD or Blu-ray player with surround info on it, or any sample rate and bit depth digital audio from any source and make that digital signal about as perfect as it can be.  You can then place the output of the Lens into your new PWD through I2S, or your existing D to A or surround processor through either coax, balanced or optical and enjoy jitter free digital audio from any source.  The performance improvements for audio and video system are stunning.”

http://www.naim-audio.com/products/dac.html

“In the Naim DAC the master clock is not recovered from the S/PDIF signal as usual. Instead the audio data is read from S/PDIF, stored in solid-state memory and then clocked back out to the DAC chips using a fixed-frequency local master clock. “

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1182558

"APPLE AUTHENTICATION CHIP
Enables the DAC to access digital data from iPod and iPhone models. The Naim DAC is the world’s first Apple-Authenticated highend digital to analogue converter."
http://www.penna-media.hu/naim/naim_dac … 4%20LR.pdf

0authent.jpg

"I thought it was impossible to bypass the iPod's DAC. "So did we," said Wadia president John W. Schaffer. "Then we discovered the little-known fact that Apple had a process called 'authentication' that allowed mobile electronics companies to bypass the iPod's internal DAC."
"Authentication" refers to Apple's authentication chip, which essentially tells the iPod that it's okay to output raw digital audio or video data to the chip-enhanced component. The authentication chips are only available in Apple products or from products made by Apple-licensed third-party developers. After Wadia first began developing what became the iTransport, Apple opened up the authentication program to more third-party vendors. The iTransport may be the first audio product of its kind, but it probably won't be the last."

The Onkyo ND-S1 Digital Media Transport isn't cheap, but if you're serious about getting quality audio using an iPod, it's the best option you have.

True, it's not got much in the way of competition, but for now, this is without doubt the best, affordable way to get your iPod's tunes out to your home system.

Le dock Denon ASD-51 intègre-t-il la plate-forme Jupiter de Frontier Silicon ?

“Frontier Silicon, a leading supplier of digital radio technology, has announced that its new hardware/software solution announced today for low cost Internet radio receivers including AM/FM tabletop radios, networked iPod/MP3 docks and clock radios will allow consumer electronics (CE) manufacturers to provide products at affordable mass market price points of under US$149.99…
Customers include Bang & Olufsen, Bose, Bush, Cyrus, Denon...”

Brevet d'Apple sur l'authentification iPod / iPhone (Method and system for authenticating an accessory) :
“Numerous third-parties have developed accessories for use with media players. An accessory may be used with the media player as long as a compatible connector or port is utilized. Accessories interact with the media player using an accessory protocol. One example of an accessory protocol is referred to as iPod Accessory Protocol (iAP), which is available from Apple Computer, Inc. of Cupertino, Calif. The accessory protocol includes commands which have been typically been made freely accessible to accessory developers. A problem with the commands being freely accessible is that they can be used by unauthorized or counterfeit accessory devices.
One solution is to perform authentication operations on an accessory device. Accordingly, the accessory devices would not have any access to the media player until after the authentication process is complete.”

http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f7/onkyo- … ost6163646

All,

I spent well over an hour this evening comparing the Wadia iTransport and Onkyo ND-S1's coaxial digital outputs (using the stock power supplies, as well as the SLA battery power from the Red Wine Audio Isabellina HPA):

Source - iPhone using Apple Lossless files.
Amp/Dac - Isabellina HPA
Headphones - HD800s with ALO Audio cabling.

Sound

In terms of sound quality - they are really so close that I really cannot call one a winner.

When using the their stock SMPS adapters, they sound nearly identical.

When fed from the SLA battery power, they both showed an equally noticeable improvement in sound (better defined bass, larger soundstage, better imaging, more extended top-end with less stridency)... what you typically hear when move up to a higher quality digital transport.

I am guessing (just from listening) that they are using very similar circuitry inside (haven't had the time to open them both up and compare)...

Features

Wadia iTransport offers a more solid feel and nice rubber isolation feet. The Wadia also comes with different iPod dock adapters to use with various iPod models (e.g. iPhone, iPod Classic, Nano, etc.).

The Onkyo does not seem to come with different iPod dock adapters, but it has a sliding door on the top to protect the dock plug

The Onkyo has both coax and optical outputs (Wadia only has coax), as well as a USB input. Using the iPod/PC button, you can switch between using your iPods digital output, or feeding the Onkyo from your computer's USB port (thus making it a USB-to-SPDIF converter). The USB input is also nice so you can sync your iPod to iTunes while it is in the dock (Wadia does not have this). The Onkyo also has an On/Standby switch, while the Wadia has no power switch.

The Wadia has analog outputs (what is the point? You buy this for the digital output so you can feed your higher quality dac!) and s-video, while the Onkyo has no analog output and composite video. I really can care less about analog audio or video outputs for these units - but I thought I'd mention it.

Both units come with remotes with basic playback features - nothing special.

Build quality

The Wadia is more solid and feels twice as heavy, but it is also larger. The Onkyo is less than half the height and less deep (and approx. the same width).

Value

Have to give the win to the Onkyo - more features, less cost.

I'm not sure when the Onkyo is coming to North America, but my guess is the price will be at least $150 less than the Wadia (MSRP = $379).

I hope this has been helpful, and I look forward to reading others impressions and comparisons between these two units.

Best regards,

Vinnie

http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f45/ny-ar … ns-455588/

4108137620_bf60474442_o.jpg

I also enjoyed the Red Wine setup as well...they had the onkyo ipod dock not yet available going into the Isabellina amp/da combo. This amp/da combo had somewhat of a british sound to me so I was a bit partial to it...ok very partial to it. I would attribute the sound to the clean power it provides. The Isabellina is battery powered only. The battery lasts for the whole day running the dock then charges when you turn it off at night. Brilliant.
Also noteworthy at RWA was the onkyo dock...this doesn't have the sex appeal the Wadia dock has but it sounds identical has more features for syncing and integrating and is a fraction of the price.

Vinnie explained that the high jitter of the Wadia iTransport (I have 2, wish I had waited for the Onkyo he was showing!) is a result of the cheap switching power supply that comes with it, and his new (soon-to-be-available) battery pack is the answer. Can't wait.

Red Wine Audio Isabellina - I've heard Vinnie's newest amp/DAC creation before, and it still sounds great. This time it was sourced by (and powering) an Onkyo digital iPod doc. This little gem, that outputs a digital signal from your iPod/Touch to S/PDIF, is very slick. If it comes to the states at a competitive price anytime soon, Wadia will have finally lost its hold on this corner of the market.

Judd's bang-for-the buck rig - Koss 950, Wadia iPod dock, Assemblage 2.6, Stax SRM1/MK2 - shows that you don't have to spend $5000 to have a truly engaging listening experience.

• iPod/iPhone give bit-perfect playback with data from properly ripped CDs
• UPnP: iPod touch/iPhone – lossless files played using PlugPlayer are bit-perfect

(Naim DAC white paper)
http://www.naim-audio.com/download/Naim … g_2009.pdf

PP will still plays files from the server, and not from iTunes, but being the iPhone docked via the Naim DAC, the stream will bypass the iPhone internal DAC and be converted to audio by the Naim DAC. It will be bit perfect, according to the source file in the server.

Instead of:
file on the server>>PlugPlayer>>iPhone DAC>>iPhone audio output
you'll have:
file on the server>>PlugPlayer>>Naim DAC>>Naim DAC audio output

The DAC in the Naim is vastly superior to the one in the iPhone, but it really matters only if you play lossless files. If you play mp3 files you already had lost quality in the audio signal.

The digital stream, as well the analog audio signal, is available on the iPod Touch/iPhone dock connector. You need to check which one of the two the doc is accessing. The Wadia 170iTransport and the Onkyo ND-S1 both accesses the digital stream, not sure about the Denon ASD-51

http://www.freepatentsonline.com/y2007/0234420.html

Accordingly, the accessory devices would not have any access to the media player until after the authentication process is complete.

DanBa a écrit :

ASD-51W = "Wadia 170iTransport" (?)
